How We Help

Our Techniques

A person receiving a chiropractic examination or treatment from a medical professional in a clinical setting.

Chiropractic care improves the movement and alignment of the spine for all body shapes and sizes, with the added bonus of assisting brain to body communication. This means we can help with specific pain issues, while also enhancing whole body health including balance, coordination, headaches, mood, sleep, posture and mobility. Our chiropractic care is tailored, focused and drug-free. A naturally effective way to get back to your best as soon as possible.

Before we begin our care, we conduct an accurate diagnosis using x-rays (if needed and free for all our patients), muscle tension scans and personal consultations to define the issues and plan your personal care programme.

Gentle, Modern Adjustment Techniques
For most of our care we use low force adjusting techniques using advanced technology to deliver effective care. We use either an Activator or Impulse Instrument which are small, hand-held adjusting instruments. These deliver a quick and gentle thrust to a specific bone in the spine. It’s highly accurate, with productive results and a great alternative for those wanting a gentle approach. It is also particularly effective for those with degeneration, arthritis, osteoporosis, pregnant women as well as babies and children.

Diversified (Manual Adjustment)
Where needed or preferred, we use this technique to deliver a precise manual thrust to a specific joint in the spine. Our highly experienced chiropractors have deep knowledge of spinal anatomy and mechanics and combine direction, speed and angle to relieve pain and promote movement.

Thompson Technique
This is a system of analysis and gentle adjustment of the spine using ‘drop pieces’ on the table, that move as adjustments are made.

SOT Technique
This system taps into the power of gravity. Wedge-shaped cushions are placed at strategic areas at the pelvic and hip level while the patient lies down. This is all about the natural pull of gravity, with no spinal thrusting.

Back Pain
& Sciatica

A person suffering from lower back pain, a condition treated by a chiropractor in Hastings.

Sometimes the wear and tear of everyday life can impact the spine and cause spinal segments to move abnormally, in a dysfunctional way. That wear and tear can happen gradually, due to poor posture, or suddenly with sports injuries, falls and accidents. Because of the close relationship between the spine and nerves, everyday strains can actually impact the communication between the brain and the body. Messages may not be delivered to the brain, or could be inaccurate. When that miscommunication happens, it’s called a ‘subluxation’ and can lead to symptoms such as:

  • Back pain

  • Limited movement or rotation

  • Hip or Pelvic pain

  • Sciatica

  • Muscle tightness

  • Muscle spasms

  • Aching

  • Sharp pain

  • Stuck feeling

  • Difficulty sleeping or getting comfortable

  • Pins and needles or numbness in the legs or feet

Pain of any kind is a signal something’s wrong. Some people mask their symptoms with a pain reliever and ignore the message that there’s an underlying problem. - but that would be like removing the battery to silence a smoke detector.

Specific chiropractic adjustments to the restricted spinal joints restores its natural movement and exercises the deep, little muscles close to the spine, which ‘wakes up’ the brain to pay attention to what’s going on and take action. The brain recalibrates the symptoms, discs and soft tissues may heal, nerve involvement may be reduced, pain can ease and better stability return.

Neck Pain

A view from behind of a woman touching her neck and shoulder, indicating pain that a chiropractor in Hawke's Bay can help with.

The neck and shoulders are put under strain with poor posture, sedentary time in front of a screen, emotional stress, sports injuries, falls and accidents. Because of the close relationship between the spine and nerves, everyday strains can actually impact the communication between the brain and the body. Messages may not be delivered to the brain, or could be inaccurate. When that miscommunication happens it’s called a ‘subluxation’ and can lead to symptoms such as:

  • Limited movement or rotation

  • Muscle tightness

  • Muscle spasms

  • Headaches

  • Aching

  • Sharp pain

  • Stuck feeling

  • Difficulty sleeping or getting comfortable

  • Irritability

  • Pins and needles or numbness in the hands

Specific chiropractic adjustments to the restricted neck joints restores their natural movement and exercises the deep, little muscles close to the spine, which ‘wakes up’ the brain to pay attention to what’s going on at this location, so the brain can recalibrate the symptoms, discs and soft tissues may heal, nerve involvement may be reduced, pain can ease and better stability return.

Pregnancy Care

A pregnant woman smiling, representing gentle chiropractic care for pregnancy in Hastings, Hawke's Bay.

Our focused, gentle care can provide a more comfortable pregnancy and delivery for both mother and baby. The rapid increase in weight and breast size, postural changes, altered sleeping positions, and hormones released during pregnancy designed to relax ligaments, can all cause spinal problems (often previously unnoticed) and gradually cause more pain.

When the pelvis isn’t moving correctly, it can result in pain and stiffness, and can lead to tightness in the soft tissues, fascia and ligaments in the pelvis, restricting the baby’s movement. Movement inside the womb is vital for the development of the brain, nerve system and primitive reflexes.

Chiropractic ensures proper spine and pelvic function, which may help to:

  • eliminate aches and pains

  • make the pregnancy a more comfortable experience

  • prepare the body to be strong, supple, and as balanced as possible to carry the pregnancy

  • ensure plenty of room for baby to get into the ideal birthing position

  • improve mobility and flexibility

  • relax the pelvic floor ready for labour

  • establish balance in the pelvis to support a safer and easier birth

  • reduce back pain during delivery

  • decrease neck pain and headaches

  • increase energy levels and mood

  • promote a deeper, more restful sleep

We have specially designed pregnancy pillows with a cut-out that supports your growing tummy through all stages of pregnancy, without any pressure on your baby. This means you can enjoy lying down comfortably on your front right up until birth.

Our gentle, pregnancy-specific techniques are perfect for pregnant women.

Caring For Babies

A baby is gently cared for, representing pediatric chiropractic care in Hastings.

Dr. Feel Good checks babies to gently improve the movement of their spine and their nerve system function to help them feel their best (less pain, and more settled and relaxed), improve feeding, and support healthy growth and development, so that they can thrive.

Babies benefit by having their first chiropractic check soon after birth. Sometimes babies are checked as young as a few hours old help their body cope with the effects of a traumatic birth. Most often we see newborns after 4 days, on their first outing. Positioning in the womb, labour or the birth process can create tension and disturbance in the spinal joints of the newborn, particularly the upper neck. This can result in a wide-range of effects on the baby’s wellbeing.

Many parents see chiropractors for their baby with:

  • colic or being unsettled/irritable

  • restricted neck movement/persistent head tilt

  • a head turning preference (with or without a flat head)

  • a preference to feed off one particular breast

  • unsettledness when feeding or being held in certain positions

  • unsettledness when placed in a car-seat

  • asymmetric body position when they are lying down

  • difficulty breastfeeding

  • a weak suck with breast or bottle feeding

  • difficulty attaching to breast

  • concerns about head shape or a misshapen head

  • unsettled sleeping patterns and short naps during the day

  • discomfort with tummy-time

  • torticollis (spasm of front neck muscles)

Examination

We can check your baby either while you’re holding them on your chest, or they’re sitting on your lap. A gentle touch or ‘wiggle’ all the way up the spine over their clothing is used. The chiropractor feels the position and movement of each joint, assessing for subluxations (misaligned or restricted movement of the spine creating irritation to the nerve system).

Our Dr. Feel Good chiropractors use gentle pressure with their fingers or a specific tool to adjust restricted spinal joints to restore their natural movement and exercises the deep little muscles close to the spine. This bombards or ‘wakes up’ the brain to pay attention to what is going on at this location, so the brain can reduce tension, improve normal functions like breastfeeding, recalibrate the symptoms and ease pain.

The pressure used to adjust a baby is about the same as you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato—very gentle and just enough to make a significant difference. Many babies sleep through their adjustments.

Our chiropractors may also work on their tiny cranial bones and the dural tension through their spine with a lovely stretch to re-establish balance and create ease in their system.

Care For Children

A young patient receives a check-up, showing a friendly chiropractor in Hastings offering care for the whole family.

Parents choose for their children to have regular check-ups at Dr. Feel Good for optimal health and development. Tumbles while learning to walk, and accidents that happen through childhood can affect normal joint movement in the spine, but are often painless. Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect future development of the spine affecting posture, flexibility, which leads to impaired nerve system function. Any interference to the vital communication system between the brain and the body adversely affect the body's ability to function at its best.

Here are some potential health benefits that children may experience due to having a healthy spine and nerve system:

  • an improved ability to process and respond to stress

  • better sleep patterns

  • enhanced posture and normal structural development

  • the creation of normal movement patterns and gait

  • improved balance and coordination

  • increased focus and energy levels

Examination

We understand your little one may feel nervous about getting adjusted as it’s a whole new experience for them. We let them know they can sit on their parent’s lap or even give them a hug, while we assess their spine gently. Another way we put children at ease is by showing them the instrument we use. We’ll demonstrate on the parent’s hand how gentle the pressure is, so the parent can reassure them. Then we can let your child feel the pressure on their own hand. After we’ve finished, children often like to choose a sticker.

Older children often ‘dibs’ who of their siblings gets to have their spine checked first and jump onto the chiropractic table without hesitation.

Our Dr. Feel Good chiropractors use very gentle techniques to care for children. The pressure used is about the same as you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato—very gentle and just enough to make a significant difference. This pressure is applied to the small restricted spinal joint using a specific tool to restore its natural movement and exercise the deep, little muscles close to the spine. This bombards or ‘wakes up’ the brain to pay attention to what is going on at this location, so the brain can improve movement, posture, muscle and organ control, recalibrate symptoms, and ease pain.

This improved communication between the brain and the body – means that your child can better heal, re-establish balance and thrive.
